Diaspora Engagement in Disaster Management
The United Nations Migration Agency (UNMA), International Organization for Migration (IOM), has been dedicatedly working to promote the orderly migration across the world, in collaboration with the UN, UNDP, USAID, American Red Cross, OCHA, Inter Action, and Habitat for Humanity. In addition they are partnering with the governmental and non-governmental organizations to carry on their mission. They have been extending extensive efforts throughout the world with their protractive presence and leaving their footprints with tremendous impact.
UDiON Foundation is leading the effort in collaboration with the IOM for the Pilot Project organizing and creating a task force of Diaspora to prepare them for the Disaster Management.
Bangladesh being world’s eighth-most populous country and one of the world’s most disaster-prone and most vulnerable to climate change. It is estimated that about 10 million Bangladeshi citizens are impacted by one or more natural hazards annually.
Bangladesh ICT Policy 2009 stated to protect citizens from natural disasters through ICT based disaster warning and management technologies. Ministry of Food and Disaster Management (MoFDM) is responsible for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). Three agencies under the ministry:
– Disaster Management Bureau (DMB)
– Directorate of Relief and Rehabilitation (DRR)
– Directorate of Food (DoF)
