EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Bangladesh saw a number of significant achievements for children. The country is on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Bangladesh is partially on track to achieve MDG 7, while more needs to be done to meet MDG 5 and 8.
As measured by the GINI Index, Bangladesh experienced a modest decline in inequality at the national level. Child deprivations are exacerbated by persisting and emerging development challenges, such as negative social norms and practices (e.g. violence against women, child marriage, etc.), a high level of stunting, rapid urbanization, the rise of non-communicable diseases, and climate change. One of the year’s highlights was the Government’s launch of a new multi-stakeholder initiative committing Bangladesh to prevent an additional 108,000 child deaths annually in order to bring down preventable child deaths to 20 per 1,000 live births by 2035. Another highlight was the adoption by the Bangladesh Parliament of a new children act (The Children Act 2013), which harmonizes the definition of the child with the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
Since UDiON Foundation and Montgomery Community College (MCC) share so many community members, we’d like to enter into a partnership with your organization for the Early Childhood Development Project in Bangladesh. Particularly, we would be interested in being a featured non-profit to partner with your organization’s corporate portfolio. In turn, we would highlight your MCC on our website permanently and ECD projects in all related documents and communications including social media. Through this partnership, we hope to help MCC make the most of your corporate philanthropy while ensuring to maximize the social impact on our common cause. MCC can benefit from this project for future collaboration with international students and leading NGOs globally. We are hoping that MCC will serve as the partner organization for the proposed projects and help us with the approved certification course on Early Childhood Education (ECE) by MCC.
UDiON would like to take the privilege to introduce the program offered by the MCC office of MSDE in 2020 and continue the certification course for future events. Partnering with UDiON Foundation will increase participation globally and citizens of Bangladesh will benefit, most important it will help reduce child mortality.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
• Discuss and compare the major ideas of relevant theories of child development and their implications for developing young children.
• Ability to identify the ways teachers, NGO’s, and caregivers can use these theories to support children’s early development and learning.
• Identify and describe four domains of learning to plan and promote the growth and development of the whole child.
• Identify the milestones of physical growth, motor coordination, cognition, language, and socio-emotional development for the most critical age of children from infancy through age five.
• Identify and effectively use descriptive observation as a method to assess and study young children.
• Observe and evaluate a child’s developmental characteristics in a real classroom setting.
CHALLENGES
According to a study by UNICEF and Save The Children, worldwide over 7.6 million children under the age of 5 die each
year, over 200 million children survive, but do not reach their full human potential, due to lack of resources. Particularly
Bangladesh made significant achievements in this area of development, however, the under-five mortality rate (U5MR)
in Bangladesh stood at 46 deaths per 1,000 live births, according to the United Nations Inter-Agency Group for Child
Mortality Estimation.
SOLUTIONS
By providing essential hands-on training and continued education will increase knowledge of the service providers and
decrease child mortality and help children to explore, grow and have a healthy childhood.
LONG TERM IMPACT AND OUTCOMES
Good nutrition and health, consistent loving care and encouragement to learn in the early years of life help children to
do better at school, be healthier, have higher earnings and participate more in society. The course will focus on four
domains: 1) Cognitive, 2) Physical, 3) Language and Literacy, and 4) Social and Emotional Development.
If we pay attention to the beginning of child development, we can change the way they develop and be the gamechanger.
Study shows over 80% of baby’s brain is formed by the age of 3, and up to 75% of each meal goes to build
child’s brain also, 15 minutes of playtime can spark thousands of brain connections.
The right interventions at the right age can bolster development, break intergenerational cycles of inequity and provide
a fair start in life for every child. For babies born into deprivation, intervening early, when the brain is rapidly
developing, can reverse harm and help build resilience. For children with disabilities, it means making sure they have
access to the individual, family, and community services available to all children.
CONCLUSION
Certified educators and social workers will have the ability to disseminate the resources to parents, caregivers, social
organizations, and communities to help children at home, school, and community centers. Generally, an accredited
certificate in Early Childhood Education qualifies an individual to work with child development. This means it can open
a variety of career opportunities including pre-school teacher, childcare provider, after school care worker, childhood
camp counselor, as well as various jobs in Head Start & international organizations (e.g., UNICEF, World Health
Organization, Save the Children’s, Doctors Without Borders, and many more).
